China's Car Exports Hit 8.2 Million: What the Mix Reveals

2026-10-29

8.2 million vehicles. That is what China exported in the first nine months of 2026 - up 65.8% year on year, and already beyond most analysts' full-year forecasts.

The headline hides a sharper story. In September alone, exports hit 1.05 million units, up 61.4%. Of those, 571,000 were new-energy vehicles - a 160% jump. For four consecutive months, NEVs have accounted for more than half of everything leaving China.

That is the mix shift. Exports are no longer a side channel for surplus petrol cars. They are an EV business with a petrol tail attached.

Europe tells the same story from the other end. Chinese brands held 9.5% of the European market in the first half of 2026, per ACEA. In May, their monthly registrations in Europe overtook Japanese brands for the first time. That is not a niche. That is a tier-one presence, achieved while paying tariffs.

Underneath the volume, two numbers matter more for anyone importing. First, domestic retail is contracting: passenger-vehicle retail fell 26% in the first 25 days of October, with NEV retail down 13%. Chinese OEMs need export volume, which means your order book carries leverage it did not carry a year ago. Second, growth is concentrated in a handful of regions - Europe, Southeast Asia, Latin America, the Gulf - so shelf space in those markets is about to get crowded.

Read it as a supply signal, not a celebration. Cars are abundant and the OEMs are hungry. What is scarce is certified, well-serviced distribution in the markets everyone is now targeting. That scarcity is your pricing power - if you hold it.

Which number is actually moving in your market: the export total, or the share of it you can defend?
